How to Make Artificial Flower Arrangements Like a Pro

Artificial flower arrangements can be a beautiful alternative to traditional, fresh flowers for all event types. From weddings and celebrations to small gatherings and everyday, faux flowers are a great choice. Learning how to make artificial flower arrangements is a skill that will provide value for a lifetime!

At Something Borrowed Blooms, we’ve perfected the artistry of artificial flower design with our high-quality, premium silk wedding flowers, floral arrangements, and floral decor. Silk flower arrangements are our speciality and we’re delighted to share our passion with you.

Benefits of Artificial Flower Arrangements

There are endless benefits of artificial flower arrangements, but we’ll stay focused on the top 3 benefits for choosing faux flowers.

Longevity and Low Maintenance: Fresh Flowers typically have a lifespan of 1-5 days depending on the flower variety. Delicate stems like gardenia and hydrangeas may only last a day before wilting, while roses and a calla lily can last up to 5 days. However, an artificial stem can stay in peak bloom forever, without needing any special care, like water or sunlight.

Cost-Effective: While the cost of a silk stem may be the same or slightly more than a fresh flower stem, the long-term savings is substantial. When the added cost of professional labor is included the savings associated with learning how to make artificial flower arrangements are even greater!

At Something Borrowed Blooms, we offer silk wedding flower arrangements for rent which provides our customers savings of over 70% compared to fresh flowers. The benefits of faux flowers on the wedding day are substantial, saving couples several thousand dollars for a single-time use.

Allergy-Friendly Options: Silk flower arrangements also provide the added value of being allergy-friendly. On the contrary, most fresh flowers often have a scent or pollen, which can be a deterrent for many people with any type of scent aversion or allergies. With silk stems, everyone is able to enjoy the beautiful aesthetic of nature without unwanted side effects or concerns.

Getting Started: Selecting the Right Artificial Flowers

The most important element in achieving the most realistic artificial flower arrangement, is choosing the right faux flowers. There are so many options on the market for faux flowers. From silk and real touch to wooden and paper flowers, the options are endless.

However, if you are wanting to create a floral arrangement that can fool the eye, you will want to ensure you are selecting stems that most closely mimic flowers found in nature.

Essential Tools: Before starting your design, you will need a few essential tools including, wire cutters, styrofoam, and glue. Optional tools include 18-gauge wire, for re-stemming select florals to better maintain the shape of the design

Material: In our experience, the most realistic faux flowers are made of high-quality silk or real touch material. We recommend mixing these two materials together to achieve the most life-like design.

Color: Color is another important aspect to consider when selecting artificial flowers. Be sure to choose colors that are found in nature. Although it can be tempting to select a flower that matches other elements in your design objectives, if that color flower can not be found in the wild, it will stick out as being fake.

Shape/Size: Just as color is important, size and shape of faux flowers is equally important and for the same reasons. By selecting faux stems with the right proportions, or just as you would find in nature, you will ensure the most realistic design.

Variety: To create a balanced floral design, you will need three different types of flowers; a focal flower, line flower and filler flower. A focal flower is the flower that will immediately catch the eye, typically a focal flower has a distinct color or size/shape that commands attention. A line flower will create movement in your arrangement. Examples of line flowers include calla lilies, tulips, lilac, delphinium, or any floral variety that is more linear in nature. Lastly, filler lower which are smaller, less impactfully florals that are used to fill the spaces.

At Something Borrowed Blooms, we pride ourselves on the overall quality and design of our flower arrangements. Our faux arrangements are often mistaken for fresh flowers due to the time, skill, and artistry invested into the design process. For those looking to extend their floral crafting skills, learning how to make a wedding bouquet with artificial roses can be a great next step, enriching your decor possibilities with personal touches.

Planning Your Design

Creating a cohesive look for your event involves careful consideration of both the theme and color scheme, ensuring that every element complements the overall aesthetic. Whether you prefer a monotone design or a vibrant array of colors across the spectrum, this selection is deeply personal and pivotal in setting the tone for your event.

Equally important is the choice of container for your floral arrangement. With an array of options available, selecting a container becomes a reflection of your style. For those new to floral design or at an intermediate level, we recommend selecting a metal container that can hide a styrofoam base. Working with a foam base is the easiest approach for beginner to intermediate designers.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Artificial Flower Arrangement

Step 1. Preparing Your Flowers and Container: Start by cutting the styrofoam to fit the container of your choice. We recommend gluing the styrofoam to the container for added security. Let the glue adhesive dry before starting your design.

Step 2. Build your base with greenery: Cut each greenery stem to the desired length, as you are placing it into the styrofoam. Once you have a greenery base, start by placing your focal flower in a position where you want the most attention.

- Step 3. Create Balance: Depending on your overall design objectives, that could be centered for a balanced design or off-centered for a more asymmetrical design. An odd number of focal flowers is recommended. Move to your line flowers next, again cutting the stem to the desired length and placing into the styrofoam base. And last, place the filler flowers and additional greenery to complete the design. The position of your focal, line and filler flowers will create overall balance and composition in your design.

The artistry of artificial floral design is a skill developed through training and perfected over time. Our team of professional designers have spent countless years perfecting the trade. If time and skill are of concern, you may consider renting one of Something Borrowed Blooms’ ready-made options for your special event for added convenience, cost, and time savings.

Dawn & Dave’s Monterey Magic

Couple creates a Pinterest-worthy wedding with silk wedding flowers from Something Borrowed Blooms

@courtneychauphotography

Dawn Ethel's love story began with chance encounters through mutual friends. Reconnecting with old pals led her to her now-husband's apartment, where she spent time even before meeting him. Despite his initial serious demeanor, Dawn discovered the hidden goofball behind the stoic facade. Their love story was unconventional, filled with laughter and surprises, leading to a gorgeous October wedding.

Keep reading to learn more about the stunning details of Dawn and Dave’s wedding day!

The Planning

The wedding planning journey started with the couple's decision to tie the knot in picturesque Monterey, CA. Post-covid wedding planning conditions created limited vendor availability and the added complexity of planning a destination wedding without a coordinator. Securing the perfect venue within budget was the first milestone that put the couples on track for the wedding of their dreams. Drawing inspiration from Instagram tags of weddings at the same venue, Dawn embarked on a research trip, turning her vacation into meticulous wedding planning.

The Blooms

Choosing the right floral vendor was a critical decision for Dawn. Quality, reliability, and pricing were non-negotiable factors when selecting. Disappointments with traditional florists ultimately led her to move forward with Something Borrowed Blooms. A friend of Dawn's was a bridesmaid in another wedding in which SBBlooms flowers and decor were used. Her friend's positive experience solidified her decision to move forward with the rent and return floral company!

The Gemma Collection immediately caught Dawn's eye, aligning perfectly with the vibrant colors she envisioned for her Monterey wedding. Local flowers like Bougainvilleas inspired her choice, and SBBlooms offered the advantage of renting premium silk arrangements with this vibrant stem without worrying about wilting blooms. The planning process may have been intense, but the Gemma Collection brought the essence of Monterey to life. Dawn captured this perfectly by walking down the aisle with the Gemma Bridal Bouquet (Bougainvillea)

Check out the Gemma Collection here.

The Details

While wedding planning, Dawn faced the challenge of visualizing all the details coming together, however, on day-of, all the details came together flawlessly. Tulip Candlesticks, initially thrown in to fill space, turned out to be a delightful surprise, elevating the overall look of her dining tables. Tables were lined with lush Gemma garland and Gemma Large centerpieces, adding variation to the reception space. Bridesmaids were dressed in mix-matched blue dresses that paired beautifully with the Gemma Bridesmaids' bouquets, while the groomsmen sported light blue suits accented with the Gemma Boutonnieres

Dawn's meticulous planning and attention to detail, coupled with SBBlooms' rentals, resulted in a wedding day filled with enchantment and visual appeal.

The Review

Dawn's overall experience with SBBlooms was nothing short of exceptional. Describing it as one of the best decisions she made for the wedding, SBBlooms helped tie the entire wedding design together seamlessly. The silk wedding flowers and decor left everyone impressed, with guests surprised to learn they weren’t traditional fresh flowers.

Dawn says that she would choose SBBlooms again, reflecting on the positive impact it had on her wedding day. Her Monterey magic was made complete with the vibrant and hassle-free blooms from Something Borrowed Blooms, turning her dream wedding into a beautiful reality.

Congratulations to Dawn and Dave, and we’re so honored to have been a part of your wedding day!

Affordable Elegance: Achieving a Stunning Wedding on a Budget

Something Borrowed Blooms' Bride stays true to her wedding flower budget with premium silk wedding flowers.

@chelseachiphotography

Meet Mckenzie and Ervin, a couple whose love story began in high school but truly blossomed as they faced the challenges and joys of everyday life, sharing experiences in the service industry. Their journey from friends to life partners culminated in a wedding that defied conventions, showcasing the unique essence of their style, personalities, and priorities.

In this blog post, we'll explore Something Borrowed Blooms' pivotal role in crafting of Mckenzie and Ervin's breathtaking wedding. What makes it even more remarkable is that this was accomplished while adhering to their modest floral budget of under $600!

Continue reading to discover how this SBBlooms Bride orchestrated a stunning wedding on a budget that is both achievable and beautiful.

The Planning

After the proposal, McKenzie took it upon herself to plan the entire wedding. A task that might seem overwhelming to some but armed with a clear vision and trusted recommendations from friends, she found the process surprisingly manageable.

When it came to choosing wedding flowers, McKenzie had her heart set on premium silk arrangements. Her only criteria were that they looked beautiful and authentic while keeping the planning process stress-free. Fortunately, her fantastic photographer introduced her to the concept of rent and return wedding flowers from Something Borrowed Blooms.

“My photographer raved about how beautiful the florals looked in person and how beautiful they photographed. That’s what really sold me! I also loved the convenience of SBBlooms and that you had the option to do local pick up or have them shipped to you the week of the wedding!”

Because the venue was already breathtaking, minimal decor and florals were needed. Therefore, the order only consisted of wedding flowers for the bridal party!

The Blooms

From the second McKenzie started exploring the wedding flower collections; she fell in love with the Nina Collection. This premium silk flower collection embodies the essence of a romantic Western sunset with its warm and dreamy color palette. It features a variety of terracotta and light pink open dutchess roses, dusty lavender, rust ranunculus, and dark plum apple blossom sprays arranged together beautifully. Textured with pampas grass and curly willow, this bohemian desert-inspired collection works well for any season.

“The Nina collection is BEAUTIFUL! I knew I wanted colorful flowers because me and my bridesmaids were all wearing white. I wanted our florals to really stand out and the Nina collection had the perfect colors and tones to compliment my spring wedding!”

McKenzie styled her Bridal party in ivory luxe satin halter dresses from Show Me Your Mumu, accented with the Nina Bridesmaid Bouquets. This all-white look allowed the florals to really POP! We hope to see this trend continue through the 2024 wedding year. Ervin sported the Nina Boutonniere (ranunculus) that perfectly complimented his emerald green suit. The groomsmen played it neutral in tan suits accented with the Nina Boutonniere (pampas) for some variation.

The Review

“Wedding planning can be stressful! As a bride, you want everything to be beautiful and perfect & it’s very consuming. SBBlooms was a lifesaver in my wedding planning process because I knew it would be beautiful, and I didn’t have to stress about it. The customer service was phenomenal, and the flowers were absolutely beautiful! I would recommend SBBlooms to everyone!”

Mackenzie and Ervin’s wedding, adorned with the stunning blooms from Something Borrowed Blooms, is a testament to the idea that a beautiful wedding doesn't have to break the bank! With careful planning, a touch of creativity, and the right floral partner, couples can achieve a dream wedding without compromising on style or budget.

Congratulations to the happy couple, and thank you so much for choosing Something Borrowed Blooms to be a part of your special day!

A Stylish Affair: Dri Buonocore's Wedding Day

TikTok wedding influencer rents premium silk flowers from Something Borrowed Blooms for wedding day

@LindsayEileenPhotography

Sharing real Something Borrowed Blooms’ Couples on our Blog is one of our favorite topics. It’s a chance to give our followers insight into the entire wedding planning process, from the perspective of a fellow bride. From the early stages of planning to pulling all the wedding details together to fit their vision, each couple's story is unique. We’re thrilled to add Dri Buonocore and her now-husband, Matt’s, wedding day to the blog. Dri had a beautiful vision, and we’re so honored to have been part of her special day.

Keep reading to learn all the details about Dri and Matt's wedding day, from the initial planning to the Something Borrowed Blooms review.

The Planning:

In December 2020, Matt surprised Dri with a proposal at Renault Winery. From there, the wedding planning journey officially began! And true to post-COVID times, the engagement period was an extended one. Through the planning process, Dri started her own TikTok page, documenting and sharing her planning process and experiences with other brides. And of course, fellow brides fell in love with her! From her down-to-earth personality to her fashion advice and money-saving tips, Dri’s content was relatable and she quickly grew a following. For Dri, ordering a preview pack was her first experience with Something Borrowed Blooms, and it was a MUST-have for deciding which floral collection to go with.

“One of my favorite parts of wedding planning was getting SBBlooms preview packs. I was always pretty dead set on Wren, but of course, I had to confirm the decision. I saw Audrey, Millie, Eloise and Gemma. I loved them all and even assigned them to my future life events beyond the wedding. I had a long engagement and placed my order in advance – which, of course, led to me changing what I needed one million times. It was so easy to adjust my order online to accommodate my needs through my customer portal.”

Order a Preview Pack here to get started!

The Blooms:

Flowers are a crucial element of any wedding, but for Dri, managing her budget was equally important. She wanted to create a vision filled with beautiful florals but without breaking the bank. After considering various options, she decided to go with Something Borrowed Blooms, and here's why.

Quality: SBBlooms provided exceptional premium silk floral arrangements that exceeded Dri's expectations.

Peace of Mind: Dri knew exactly what her wedding flowers would look like, ensuring no day of surprises!

Eco-Friendly: Knowing how much waste is produced on the average wedding day, Dri felt relieved knowing she would help eliminate that factor for her special day.

Cost Savings: The total cost of their wedding order was a fraction of what she would have spent if she went with traditional fresh wedding flowers.

“For my guest count and desired amount of florals, I was looking at quotes ranging from 10k-25k. In typical florist fashion, it also had the caveat of “if I can source these flowers at the time.” I quickly ruled our traditional florals because I truly could not wrap my head around spending 10k+ on florals that would be tossed after a few hours and the amount of waste it would produce.”

For Dri, the Wren Collection was love at first sight. The collection perfectly matched her vision of traditional wedding florals with a chic modern twist. The soft whites, pinks, and the inclusion of orchids added a lively touch that set her wedding apart from the typical "all white" bridal florals.

The Bridal party carried the Wren Bridesmaid Bouquets, while dressed in light champagne satin dresses in various styles from Revelry. The Groomsmen wore traditional black tuxes while Matt, the groom, wore the Wren Boutonniere (Single Orchid).

The Reception was filled with various products from the Wren Collection. By renting her wedding flowers from SBBlooms, Dri was able to bring all of her ideas to life and then some, all while staying within her budget. She lined Wren Garlands across the mantle behind the sweetheart table for a picture-perfect backdrop. As a finishing touch, Dri lined the edge of the table with the bridal party’s Wren Bridesmaid Bouquets, which she was able to repurpose from ceremony to reception. Dri also decided to mix Wren Large Centerpieces and Wren Grand Centerpieces on Short Gold Stands on her tables.

The Review:

Dri wholeheartedly recommends SBBlooms to every nearly-wed couple she knows, and her wedding guests couldn't stop complimenting the beautiful florals that added an extra layer of magic to her special day.

“A true bright spot of Something Borrowed Blooms is the team. Customer service was always quick to answer any questions I had via email, and ensured everything in my LARGE order got to me in perfect condition and on time.”

Ultimately, it's not just about the flowers or the decorations. It's about the love, the journey, and the memories created. Dri and Matt's wedding celebrated their unique story, filled with love, laughter, and beautiful florals. Congratulations from all of us here at Something Borrowed Blooms!

A Blooming Love Story with Casey and Casey

Save on wedding flowers by mixing faux and fresh flowers for your wedding day

@lusia_studio_photography

Every love story is unique, and Casey and Casey's journey to their happily ever after is no exception. These two lovebirds found each other in the digital age of dating, and little did they know, that their shared first name would represent the beautiful balance they bring to each other's lives. As they embarked on their wedding planning adventure, Casey was faced with the challenge of finding the perfect wedding flowers to complement their venue. In her search, she stumbled upon Something Borrowed Blooms and decided to incorporate stunning faux floral collections into her big day, along with fresh blooms.

Let's delve into the story of how Casey created her dream wedding by mixing premium silk flowers from Something Borrowed Blooms with fresh flowers.

The Blooms

When it came to selecting a wedding flower vendor, Casey had a clear vision. She wanted florals that would complement her venue's romantic, warm palette, and she had a particular fondness for flower garlands. However, initial quotes from traditional fresh florists left her worried that her vision might be out of reach.

It was during these moments of uncertainty that she discovered Something Borrowed Blooms, a game-changer that reignited her excitement for the wedding planning process. The rent & return faux floral options provided her with the elaborate florals of her dreams, while still fitting comfortably into her budget. Casey's heart was set on the Nina Collection the moment she laid eyes on it. The collection's color palette exuded a romantic, boho charm that perfectly matched her venue's ambiance. The warm and dreamy colors of the Nina garlands made them an ideal fit for her wedding decor.

The Ceremony

Casey covered her circular wedding arch in Nina Garlands and lined her aisle with the same lush arrangements. She decided to incorporate real flowers for her personal flowers such as bouquets, boutonnieres, and cake decorations. By showing her fresh florist the Nina Collection, her florist was able to select fresh flowers to coordinate seamlessly. The mix of fresh and faux flowers throughout the ceremony blended perfectly and helped the couple stay within their overall budget, without sacrificing on florals.

The Reception

Casey simply relocated all of the ceremony florals to the reception which also helped to keep costs low. The gorgeous ceremony arch was moved behind the wedding party table which was the perfect way to repurpose this gorgeous installation for the reception. The tables were lined with floral garland and accented with Grand Centerpieces for a bit of height variation. Tulip Candlesticks were added for a little bit of ambiance and the perfect tablescape was complete.
